EMMA Concerts Presents Pilar Jurardo & The Amsterdam Cello Octet Saturday October 10 2009
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Event Type: Music
Cost: $22
The Amsterdam Cello Octet, a Dutch chamber music
ensemble founded in 1989, is unique in the world of music as it is
formed by 8 celli. The unusual composition of the group demands
specially written music which the Octet has inspired many contemporary
composers to write for them. The octet surprises audiences with the
many Spanish and South American songs they perform with singers such as Teresa Berganza and Pilar Jurado. The craftsmanship of the ensemble
is praised internationally; every season it is invited to many
different countries. In the last few years the group has performed on
stages in the United States and throughout Europe.
Pilar Jurado is one of the most outstanding figures in European classical music, and
the muse of contemporary creative personalities such as Harry
Halbreich, who says of her, “she is totally dazzling . . . the voice to
bring an entire auditorium to its feet.”

Joan Tasca Teaches Drawing & Painting All Levels at SJCC Saturday October 10 2009
Event Type: Art
Cost: $140
Joan Tasca, painter and art instructor, is teaching her Fall Session at the Art Advocate, St Johns Cultural Council, 76B San Marco, downtown St. Augustine, FL. She has taught K-12, college level, and adult education. Her formal training and experience give her abundant resources necessary to give students what they need to learn to draw or paint. She attended Moore College of Art and Philadelphia College of Art’s youth art programs, and holds a B.F.A. in Painting from the University of Delaware, received certification in Art Education from The University of the Arts, and attended Tyler School of Art. Her work has won awards and is in private collections.
Tasca teaches students to draw or paint, by teaching them the importance of working from actual situations, to “see” what is in front of them. This is important especially in the beginning. Whether they interpret it as realism or abstraction is personal style, but seeing details and colors that they couldn’t see before always amazes the students. She says it’s great to watch her students re-discover the world around them. Methods of instruction include demonstrations, lectures, critiques, student production in class and home projects. Private lessons are available for youth and adults.

Changing of the Guard Saturday October 10 2009
Event Type: Parks_Recreation
Cost:
As a typical day in 1740 St Augustine draws to a close,
soldiers guarding the Governors house are dismissed for the night, but not
before replacements arrive. The commanding officer rigorously inspects the
weapons and equipment of the replacements. The retiring soldiers, finished with
their duties for the day are ordered to clear their weapons with the command
“Disparen!” The resounding blast of musket fire assures the residents of 18th century San Augustin, that guards are in place and the city is secured for the
night.
The
program begins as a platoon of Spanish soldiers departs the City Gates and
marches down St George Street to Government House. Upon arrival, and following
the commands of the officer, in Castilian Spanish translated into English, the
platoon relives the guards on duty who then clear their weapons for the night,
providing a dramatic finish. Afterwards, the reenactors remain to answer
questions and pose for photographs with visitors.
Changing of the Guard, a reenactment depicting a daily
routine for the Spanish Garrison in St Augustine in 1740, will be performed on
the first four Saturdays in October, (3, 10, 17, & 24) 2009. The program
begins at 7:00PM in front of Government House across from the Plaza de la
Constitucion. The half hour program is free.
This event is presented by members of the St Augustine
Spanish Garrison, with support from the City of St Augustine, and The St Johns
County Tourist Development Council.
