The St. Augustine Community Orchestra has prepared a lively Halloween program for children and their families. The program includes a menu of cheerful "fright music" selected by Director/Conductor John Bush who has provided leadership for the orchestra since 1995. This special Halloween program moves from the charmingly solemn music of Chopin's "Marche Funebre" to the fantastic music of "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" by John Williams, and includes a seldom heard work for pizzicato strings by Ferde Grofe titled "Trick or Treat." In addition, a special rendition of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue" will be played by the orchestra's woodwind octet. It's music to put the whole family in a festive Halloween mood, so bring them all to enjoy this special Halloween program. Tickets are $10 at the door for adults; children under 12 are admitted free. No reservations are required.
The St. Augustine Community Orchestra has been in existence since 1961, making it one of the longest-running cultural entities in St. Augustine. It is made up of 50 or more volunteer and semi-professional musicians. Each year they perform four or more concerts in October, December, March, and May. The orchestra is supported in part by the St. Johns Tourist Development Council, by advertising in the concert programs, by individual donations and sponsors, and by the audience's admission fees and donations. Members of the orchestra also play for hire at various local and regional special events, donating their fees to support the orchestra. For more information, log on to http://saco-fl.awardspace.com.
Fifth Annual Crescent Beach Paint Out Friday October 30 2009
Event Type: Food
Cost:
Artwork from the Fifth Annual Crescent Beach Paint Out will be on view October 31 from 5:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. at the Art Advocate Gallery during the next Uptown Saturday Night.
During the week long Paint Out, hosted each year by Island Fine Art, 36 plein air artists from throughout the state will paint local scenes and landscapes found in and around Anastasia Island and St. Augustine.
Once again, Island Fine Art is pleased to partner with the St. Johns Cultural Council (SJCC) in bringing the Crescent Beach Paint Out to the historic downtown area. Over 60 paintings from this year's event will be on display at the SJCC's Art Advocate Gallery located at 76-B San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artwork from this year's Paint Out will be donated to the SJCC in appreciation for their support.
The Art Advocate will also serve as a “wet room” during the weeklong paint out. Newly completed works will be arriving daily at the gallery for viewing. The public is welcome to stop by from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day to see the latest works of art.
Plein Air, a French term meaning "in the open air,” describes art works that have been painted outdoors with the subject directly in view rather than in a studio. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works.
Artwork from the Crescent Beach Paint Out will remain on display and for sale through the end of November at Island Fine Art located at 6279 A1A South in Crescent Beach as well as the SJCC’s Art Advocate Gallery. For more information and a complete event schedule, visit www.crescentbeachpaintout.com or call 904-471-5808.
