Joan Tasca Teaches Oil or Acrylic Painting All Levels at SJCC
October 01 Thursday 2009
Event Type: Art
Cost: $140
Joan Tasca, painter and art instructor, is teaching her Fall Session at the Art Advocate, St Johns Cultural Council, 76B San Marco, downtown St. Augustine, FL. She has taught K-12, college level, and adult education. Her formal training and experience give her abundant resources necessary to give students what they need to learn to draw or paint. She attended Moore College of Art and Philadelphia College of Art’s youth art programs, and holds a B.F.A. in Painting from the University of Delaware, received certification in Art Education from The University of the Arts, and attended Tyler School of Art. Her work has won awards and is in private collections.
Tasca teaches students to draw or paint, by teaching them the importance of working from actual situations, to “see” what is in front of them. This is important especially in the beginning. Whether they interpret it as realism or abstraction is personal style, but seeing details and colors that they couldn’t see before always amazes the students. She says it’s great to watch her students re-discover the world around them. Methods of instruction include demonstrations, lectures, critiques, student production in class and home projects. Private lessons are available for youth and adults.
Thursdays, September 17th thru October 22nd. Oil or Acrylic Painting, All Levels: 9 – noon. Beginners will learn color theory, tools and techniques. Intermediate and Advanced students will refine skills, learn new ones, and work on personal style.
$140 fee (each course) is due by September 12th. Classes are six weeks, three hours . Class size is limited. Call (904) 794-2594 for materials and to register.

UNF Art and Design professors Paul Ladnier and Emily Arthur Douglass will conduct a lecture at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, a cultural resource of UNF, related to their works currently on display. The Art of Teaching lecture series augments the UNF Art and Design Faculty Exhibition at MOCA Jacksonville through Jan. 3, 2010. The lectures present the context in which each participating artist’s works on exhibition were created.
Ladnier’s love for the texture of paint and its range of saturated colors will be discussed by this artist who is equally gifted at painting a landscape or an abstract. Douglass draws from nature in her experimental printmaking techniques. Birds, moths and snakes are among the motifs she uses to comment on the fragility of our existence and the rhythms and cycles of natural processes. As a typical day in 1740 St Augustine draws to a close,
soldiers guarding the Governors house are dismissed for the night, but not
before replacements arrive. The commanding officer rigorously inspects the
weapons and equipment of the replacements. The retiring soldiers, finished with
their duties for the day are ordered to clear their weapons with the command
“Disparen!” The resounding blast of musket fire assures the residents of 18th century San Augustin, that guards are in place and the city is secured for the
night.
The
program begins as a platoon of Spanish soldiers departs the City Gates and
marches down St George Street to Government House. Upon arrival, and following
the commands of the officer, in Castilian Spanish translated into English, the
platoon relives the guards on duty who then clear their weapons for the night,
providing a dramatic finish. Afterwards, the reenactors remain to answer
questions and pose for photographs with visitors.
Changing of the Guard, a reenactment depicting a daily
routine for the Spanish Garrison in St Augustine in 1740, will be performed on
the first four Saturdays in October, (3, 10, 17, & 24) 2009. The program
begins at 7:00PM in front of Government House across from the Plaza de la
Constitucion. The half hour program is free.
This event is presented by members of the St Augustine
Spanish Garrison, with support from the City of St Augustine, and The St Johns
County Tourist Development Council.

musicians; surging, afro-drumming, and aggressive horn blasts — but
this is not party music. It’s at times disorienting and overwhelming,
but it always maintaining a cool, alluring mystique.

Joan Tasca Teaches Oil or Acrylic Painting All Levels at SJCC
October 08 Thursday 2009

EMMA Concerts Presents Pilar Jurardo & The Amsterdam Cello Octet
October 10 Saturday 2009
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Event Type: Music
Cost: $22
The Amsterdam Cello Octet, a Dutch chamber music
ensemble founded in 1989, is unique in the world of music as it is
formed by 8 celli. The unusual composition of the group demands
specially written music which the Octet has inspired many contemporary
composers to write for them. The octet surprises audiences with the
many Spanish and South American songs they perform with singers such as Teresa Berganza and Pilar Jurado. The craftsmanship of the ensemble
is praised internationally; every season it is invited to many
different countries. In the last few years the group has performed on
stages in the United States and throughout Europe.
Pilar Jurado is one of the most outstanding figures in European classical music, and
the muse of contemporary creative personalities such as Harry
Halbreich, who says of her, “she is totally dazzling . . . the voice to
bring an entire auditorium to its feet.”
Joan Tasca Teaches Drawing & Painting All Levels at SJCC
October 10 Saturday 2009

Joan Tasca Teaches Oil or Acrylic Painting All Levels at SJCC
October 15 Thursday 2009

EWLI Welcomes Margaret Kaler for October Leadership Roundtable Reinventing Yourself
October 15 Thursday 2009
11:45 AM - 1:00 PM
Event Type: Community
Cost: $10
The Enterprising Women’s Leadership Institute, Inc. continues its 2009/10 Leadership Roundtable Series Thursday, October 15th at 11:45Am at Cortesses’s Bistro. The purpose of the roundtable is to bring together civic, community, professional, and business leaders discussing and sharing ideas, views, and personal experiences with contemporary women from our communities.
Margaret Kaler, actor and storyteller, enjoys sharing portrayals of writers Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Isak Dinesen. Kaler makes her avocation her vocation--creating and adapting opportunities for acting and storytelling--tour guide, ghost story "guide", first person portrayals of Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Dr. Esther Hill Hawks; actor manager of Comedia Dell 'Arte and Comedie Histrios; plays with City Gates Productions, and currently playing Rosemary in Limelight Theatre's production of “Picnic.” Kaler will focus on Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa whose main character lost her farm. She said she wrote stories set in the past because she felt that her own life was in the past. Losing the farm, which she fought hard to save for the Kikuo people who lived there, presented her the challenge of creating another life back in Denmark. She re-invented herself as a writer who was phenomenally successful in the US and England, as well as in Denmark, transforming her losses into the myth of herself--the Baroness.
EWLI Leadership Roundtable meets the third Thursday of each month at Cortesses. The next roundtable meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 11:45AM at Cortesse’s Bistro and Flamingo Bar, San Marco Avenue, St. Augustine. All lunches are $10 – including tip and tax. There is no fee for attending. Choice of three entrees. Reservations Encouraged as Seating is Limited. If you plan to attend and want a guaranteed seat, please RSVP to Leadership Roundtable: Marilyn Wiles, wiles1964@bellsouth.net or call 461-7297.

Joan Tasca Teaches Drawing & Painting All Levels at SJCC
Joan Tasca Teaches Drawing & Painting All Levels at SJCC
October 17 Saturday 2009

BPW/Flagler County Presents the Woman of the Year Awards Dinner
October 19 Monday 2009
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Event Type: Community
Cost: $35
The Business and Professional Women/Flagler County (BPW/Flagler County) has named Faith Coleman as their 2009 Woman of the Year. The award, presented annually, is given to a Flagler County woman who typifies the image of today’s working woman. The award will be presented at a dinner in her honor on Monday, October 19th at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Palm Coast.
Faith Coleman, a nurse practitioner, is founder of the Flagler County Free Clinic in Bunnell. It’s mission is to meet the healthcare needs of the uninsured residents of Flagler County though the commitment of local volunteers and donations. Open in 2005, the Clinic now serves approximately 80 patients every other weekend, with a staff of 120 volunteers. As an independent nurse practitioner working for several doctors, this mother of six children found herself facing kidney cancer surgery with no health insurance. She was forced to mortgage her home to pay for the surgery. This event drove her to start the free clinic as she now had personally experienced the desperate circumstances that many others must face daily. Her deep compassion and empathy are now shared with her patients and their healthcare needs.
The awards dinner is open to the public and costs $35 p.p. Reservations are required by Friday, October 16th and should be made with Diana Christen at diana@flcsafehouse.com or by sending your reservation and check to BPW/Flagler County, P.O. Box 353502, Palm Coast, FL 32135.
BPW/Flagler County promotes equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, information and scholarship programs. The organization is open to all who believe in it’s goals and objectives. Dinner meetings are held the third Monday of the month and feature speakers on workplace topics. For membership information, contact Jeanne Passalaqua by email: jeannarotary2@aol.com.

Joan Tasca Teaches Oil or Acrylic Painting All Levels at SJCC
October 22 Thursday 2009
