Canine Camp (Morning Session) at St. Augustine Humane Society
August 02 Monday 2010
Event Type: Community
Cost: $65
Two Canine Camps are scheduled consisting of one hour sessions for four days in a row. These Canine Camps will be both fun and educational for local dog owners; and, because of the summer break, children are encouraged to come with their parents to learn about training their dogs.
Through games and activities, the dogs will learn the basics: sit, stay, down, come, walking on a loose leash, etc. They will also learn good manners while socializing with other dogs and people.
Family members will learn how to shape desirable behaviors while eliminating unwanted ones, by using positive and humane techniques. Beyond this, they will learn how best to communicate with their dogs; and how to work together to build a happy, long-lasting relationship, and become the dog's natural leader.
Children especially can benefit greatly from these camps. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that over 2 million children are bitten by dogs each year - 80% by canines the children know or interact with regularly.
Dogs view the children in their family pack as siblings, and love to interact with them the same way they do with other dogs: chasing, tackling, mouthing and pawing. These dogs need to be taught that children are not their play toys, they are their leaders. In order to do that, children need to take responsibility for some of the care of their dogs, by feeding, walking, grooming - and especially training.
Children also need to be taught good manners while around their dogs. They should respect their dogs, and handle them gently and kindly. They should never pull their dogs' tails, hit or kick them, or poke and pester them. Running and screaming around their dogs should also be avoided because these behaviors can arouse the dogs even more, often causing them to lunge and bite.
Training your dog is a family affair. Every member of your household should learn the training techniques and participate in your dog's education. The more every family member knows, the better behaved your dog will be!

We are excited to announce the next series of classes in River House's Art classes: Oil Painting with Greg Morris. This class will teach you the basics of oil painting and turn you into an artist. This class will run August 6th - September 10th 12-2:30 PM. Cost is $75 and includes supplies and instruction. River House would like to make art accessible to seniors regardless of income limitations. With the support of the St. Johns County Cultural Council serving St. Johns County, and the State of the Arts License Plate Program, we are proud to offer scholarships for two students to this class. Contact Linley Harriss at 209-3646 or lharriss@stjohnscoa.com for registration or scholarship criteria.
