Museums
St. Augustine museums are informative, fun, and extremely eclectic, in and of themselves. The Lightner Museum, for example, houses everything from a mummy, a shrunken head, and a stuffed lion that once belonged to Winston Churchill to stained glass and cigar-wrapper collections. It is located in what was once Flagler’s Alcazar Hotel, which was the more affordable option as opposed to the Ponce de Leon and also housed a huge, indoor swimming pool, a casino, and an early movie theater. You will quickly realize that every museum in St. Augustine houses historic artifacts in equally historic locations. Even the Ripley’s Museum is located in historic Castle Warden, once a home during the Flagler Era that also operated as a hotel for a time and was the home of author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. You will definitely have trouble deciding if the history and artifacts pertinent to the museum locations or the more eclectic artifacts collected therein are more interesting. Both, you will decide, are worth the visit.
