Celtic Festival

Celtic Festival brings ancient traditions to America’s oldest city.

The St. Augustine Celtic Music & Heritage Festival transforms the nation’s oldest city into a celebration of Celtic culture every March. The festival grounds at Francis Field come alive with the sounds of bagpipes, fiddles, and traditional Celtic bands performing on multiple stages throughout the weekend. Visitors can enjoy performances by internationally acclaimed Celtic musicians and dancers, while authentic food vendors serve up traditional fare like shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, and fish and chips. The festival also features a Highland Games competition, where skilled athletes compete in traditional Scottish heavy events like the caber toss, stone put, and hammer throw.

Clan representatives set up tents to help visitors research their Celtic ancestry, while artisans and craftspeople demonstrate traditional skills like weaving, metalworking, and woodcarving. A highlight of the weekend is the St. Patrick’s Day parade through downtown St. Augustine’s historic streets, featuring pipe and drum bands, floats, and marching groups in traditional Celtic dress. The parade draws thousands of spectators who line the ancient streets of the colonial city, creating a unique blend of Celtic tradition and Florida’s Spanish colonial history.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Streets turn green as Ireland’s spirit marches through America.

St. Patrick’s Day brings a vibrant wave of Irish celebration to city streets across America each March 17th, with parades serving as the centerpiece of these festivities. The tradition dates back to 1762 in New York City, and has since spread to become a nationwide phenomenon. These parades feature a mesmerizing display of marching bands, elaborately decorated floats, step dancers, bagpipers, and community groups dressed in their finest green attire. Local politicians, police and fire departments, schools, and cultural organizations all participate, making it a true community celebration that draws thousands of spectators who line the streets to catch glimpses of the pageantry.

Modern St. Patrick’s Day parades often incorporate unique local traditions alongside classic elements like the wearing of green and displays of shamrocks. Many cities put their own spin on the celebration – Chicago dyes its river green, Savannah hosts one of the largest parades in the country, and Boston’s parade reflects the city’s deep Irish roots. The parades serve not just as entertainment but as a powerful reminder of the influence of Irish immigrants on American culture and a chance for people of all backgrounds to embrace Irish heritage for a day.
