The St. Augustine Archaeological Association Monthly Meeting for February is on Tuesday, the 6th from 7:00pm-8:30pm in the Tiffany Room at Flagler College.  Free and open to the public.

The speaker is Greg Hendryx, the Archaeology Sector Leader at SEARCH, Inc. For more than two decades, he has focused his research on northeast Florida and has developed a strong familiarity with the archaeological material culture of the region.

He will discuss The Shannon Road Midden Site. Located 10 miles north of the Castillo de San Marcos, it has produced archaeological evidence of a Mission Period component that stands in contrast to most others in the region. Specifically, it yielded ceramics indicative of non-local types. It is small-sized and there are no archival or cartographic settlement data available that describe the site.

Based on these criteria and other lines of evidence, this site is interpreted as a late 17th to early 18th century multi-ethnic Native American refugee camp that was only briefly settled near St. Augustine to be closer to Spanish allies and evade English raids.
