Castillo by Candlelight: Enemy at the Gates
History comes to life in this after-hours event as townspeople get caught up in the 1740 bombardment and siege of St. Augustine. That’s when British forces, led by General James Oglethorpe, laid siege and were poised to run the Spanish from the Ancient City. Citizens, terrified about the possibility of losing their homes, clung to the hope that the Spanish forces would strike a blow from the Castillo that would send the British invaders away.
Experience the old fort as guests are led through the Castillo by lantern light. You may ‘see’ Oglethorpe and his commanders discussing the siege, soldiers in the ravelin (fortified entrance area) discussing rumors for the impending attack, reports from the Indian allies of the Spanish on the conditions at Fort Mose, discussions on the dwindling supply situation at Castillo, reports from the Engineering Officer, a medical station, and troops preparing for a surprise attack on Fort Mose.
