In the GTM Wildflowers Course, Richard Thomas will teach you everything you could ever want to know about wildflowers at the GTM Research Reserve (GTMNERR).
Class Dates | Time: October 12, 19, & 26 and November 9 & 16 | 9:00am-10:30am
Location: Classroom 2 at GTM Visitor Center
Consisting of 5 sessions that will focus on:
* What makes the Beach-Dune habitat, Barrier Islands, Coastal Uplands, and Marshes unique and what plants/wildflowers are found in these habitats.
* Plant characteristics – utilize plant drawings, photographs, and plants available from local nurseries, learn the terminology, field guides, identification keys, and season blooms related to plant/flower characteristics.
* Backyard flowers – ways to grow wildflowers at home with discussions on native versus non-native wildflowers, invasive plants, and wildflower nurseries.
* Promoting ethical activities – information related to native plant societies, botanical gardens, and locations outside GTMNERR in Florida where native wildflowers can be seen. Designations of wildflowers (threatened, endangered, rare, protected), ethical, and legal considerations, plus when and where to report wildflowers and potential legal concerns.
* Instruction for the use of online tools (iNaturalist).
