Come to The Waterworks for Wade in The Water: A Journey Into Black Surfing and Aquatic Culture. The special showing of the award-winning documentary honors Juneteenth and the Civil Rights history of St. Augustine

When: Friday, June 21, 2024 from 7:00pm-9:00pm

Celebrating the rich heritage of Black surfing, weaving together historical narratives and contemporary accounts to break down racial barriers within the surfing community and highlight the overlooked legacy of Black surfers.

Following the screening guests can engage in a thought-provoking Q&A session with key activists from the historic 1964 St. Augustine Beach wade-in.

They are:
* Director David Mesfin, a St. Augustine native whose personal connection to the community inspired his exploration of Black surfing.
* GiGi Lucas, the founder of SurfearNEGRA, a movement dedicated to diversifying the sport of surfing. Lucas’s advocacy has garnered recognition from esteemed publications and media outlets.
* Deyona Burton, an influential figure in the SurfearNEGRA community and a passionate advocate for social justice. Burton’s accolades include recognition from the White House and the National Action Network, reflecting her commitment to community empowerment and youth engagement.
