Juneteenth Recognition Concert 2024 – New Orleans meets Harlem

Marcus Roberts and the Modern Jazz Generation will be performing on June 19, 2024 at Lewis Auditorium. This long-term musical partnership includes pianist Marcus Roberts, the phenomenal drummer Jason Marsalis, and gifted bassist Rodney Jordan.  The first half of the program is “100 Years of Rhapsody in Blue: New Orleans Meets Harlem”.

Known for their entirely new approach to jazz, the trio believes in “letting the music take over”.  The result is a powerfully rhythmic and melodic sound that is filled with rhythmic, harmonic, and dynamic contrast.

The St. Augustine Music Festival (SAMF) Chamber Orchestra will join the Marcus Roberts Trio during the second half of the program to perform Rhapsody in Blue on the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s famous composition.  They will be performing the original score of “Rhapsody in Blue” which debuted with the Paul Whitman orchestra on February 24, 1924.

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day – June 19, 1865 – when federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were now free. The troops’ arrival came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln.

And 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act on July 2, 1964.
